Replacing the windows is one of the few home improvements that pays you back every single month. It shows up on the heating bill, on the cooling bill, and in how the house feels to sit in on a January evening.

Much of Bergen County's housing stock went up between the 1920s and the 1960s, which means a lot of homes are still on their original wood windows or on the first generation of replacements from the 1980s. Both were built to a standard that no longer holds up.
New Jersey makes that expensive. Winters run cold enough that your heating system works for months, summers are humid enough that your air conditioning fights back, and old windows leak conditioned air through the frame, the sash and the failed seal between the panes.
The right style depends on the opening, how the room is used, and what the front of the house should look like from the street. We measure every opening individually rather than ordering a standard size and trimming to fit.
The glass package matters more than the frame. Low-E is a microscopically thin metallic coating that reflects heat back to the side it came from — it keeps warmth inside in January and pushes solar heat away in July. Argon gas between the panes insulates better than plain air, and a warm-edge spacer stops the frame edge from becoming the cold spot that causes condensation.
Look for the ENERGY STAR label rated for the Northern climate zone. That is the zone New Jersey falls into, and the specification is stricter than the national one.
There is no single price per window, and any contractor who gives you one before measuring is guessing. Cost is driven by the number of openings, the size and style of each one, the glass package, and whether the job is an insert replacement or a full-frame replacement.
An insert fits new units into sound existing frames and costs less. A full-frame replacement strips back to the rough opening, which is the right call when the frame or sill has rot — and the only way to fix the underlying problem rather than cover it.

New siding is the fastest way to change how a house looks from the street — but the part that matters most is the weather barrier going on behind it. Both need to be done properly to survive a New Jersey winter.

These are the two materials worth considering for a North Jersey home, and the honest answer is that neither one wins outright. Vinyl costs less to buy and less to install, never needs painting, and modern insulated vinyl adds real R-value to the wall. It is the practical choice for most houses.
Fiber cement costs more and is heavier and slower to hang, but it holds paint for 15 years or more, will not soften or warp in summer heat, and takes a crisper shadow line that suits older colonials and Victorians. On a house where the exterior detail matters, it is worth the difference.
Siding fails from behind before it fails on the surface. By the time a panel is visibly buckling, water has usually been getting in for a while. The signs below are worth acting on early, because the cost jumps sharply once moisture reaches the sheathing underneath.
A siding job is not just the panels. Removing the old material is the only chance anyone gets to see the sheathing underneath, so that inspection is part of every job we quote — and if we find rot, we show you photos before we touch it.
Siding is the single largest visible surface on a house, so replacing it changes the property more than any other exterior job. It is consistently among the highest-return improvements a homeowner can make when it comes time to sell.
The part people underestimate is the wall assembly. Properly installed house wrap, sealed penetrations and correct overlap turn the exterior into a continuous weather barrier — which is what actually stops the drafts and keeps the framing dry through a North Jersey winter.
